This short book is intriguing and timely, even though it goes back to World War I. It's the author's grandfather Gabriel who wrote the journal from the trenches. His grandson, Gabe, is the first in the family to read the journal which he just discovered in a locked chest.The author combines the grandson's and the grandfather's emotions very well. Then there's May, the girl next door to the narrator, about the same age. A lovely little relationship there.
"Without trust, there is no promise for the future." That's what grandfather learned in the trenches. And the narrator picks up on it: "Don't let your past rule your life, but deal with it and then let it go." All in all, a neat way of telling a story that spans six or seven generations, and the bond between grandfather and grandson strengthens even more even though "Grandpa" is now gone. I recommend this short read.
